The major cause of mononucleosis disease is Infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Other than Epstein Barr Virus,a virus known as cytomegalovirus also able to cause mono-like syndrome. The mechanism of action in which Epsten-Barr Virus cause mono are thought to be through derangement of immune system. The B cells lymphocytes which a responsible cells in immune system will be infected by Epsten-Barr Virus which further lead to increase in numbers of white blood cells known as mononuclear leukocytes. The name of mononucleosis come form the word “mononuclear leukocytes”. The infection can further lead to increase in size of the immune system organ which store mononuclear leukocytes.Example of immune system organ which contain mononuclear leukocytes are lymph nodes, spleen and tonsils.
